Satellite phone service and satellite phones use limitations.
Satellite phone service can enable your freedom of movement when travelling in remote areas though. It would be great to have the world covered in cell phone service cells like a honeycomb, but this is not possible or practical.
There are no options for putting a cell phone tower on the ocean, for example!
Since cell phone service towers are land based, even if you could keep one on the surface of the planet, how ould you supply it with power to operate if you have it floating out on the ocean? This is why satellite phone services are so attractive here.
The tower cannot be bobbing up and down or around either if you are going to get any useful signal out of it. This is why cell phones do not work more than a few miles off shore. Cell phone signals from the tower will travel 22 miles on flat ground.
You can inprove your chances with a good phone antenna and amplifier even out on the ocean, but after a certain point you wont get any cell phone signal no matter how good you antenna package is. Large ships have satellite phones for this reason.
There are also remote areas where you can travel by motor vehicle and not have any phone service because there are no towers along your route!
This is slowly changing, but it is a fact of life. No cell phone company is going to go through the expense of installing a cell phone tower in an area where there are not enough customers to support it either.
There are many countries in the world where cell phones are just not that important to the inhabitants of some of these countries and they have no desire for mobile phones!
Satellite phones can work in a motor vehicle if you have a satellite phone antenna installed on the roof of trunk of your car for instance.
Satellite phone antennas and cell phone antennas are not compatible with each other! One will not work with the other just because they look alike. These are two different types of technologies here and they work completely different from each other.
The bottom line here is if your in an area where cell phone service just cannot be had, even with the best of antenna systems, satellite phone service could be your only choice.
