Your marine cell phone and boat cell phone usage.

Marine cell phone considerations and boating. I have been asked a lot about the Motorola M800 and M900 for dedicated use on a boat. I would not recommend doing this!

Sea water and electronics are not compatible friends!

Sea water is really corrosive to electronic components and that would include cell phones. I would not think that Motorola would make a cell phone specifically for watercraft use. I would go with a phone that you can take with you when you leave the boat. That would include a bag phone if you need one of those!

Because of the specialty nature of marine electronics and the requirements of communications at sea, you need more than just a cell phone while boating. A cell phone is not as good as a marine VHF radio. If you get into trouble and you need help, only the person on the other end of the cell phone can hear you. A marine VHF radio will broadcast to everyone within your range and you have extra help coming from other boaters.

There is a link below that explains this better than I can. It's called nautical know how and it is a must read for those who own boats. Click here to go back to the marine cell phone first page. Click here to go to nautical know how. Don't forget to take a cell phone antenna booster/amplifier with you on your boat!

Just because you shouldn't rely on your cell phone as your only form of communication on a boat while out at sea, you should still bring it with you! A good cell phone antenna booster/amplifier will help boost your signal strength up to 50 decibels.

A cell phone when combined with a two way Marine VHF radio will double your communications capabilities if you need them. A cell phone call and a VHF Marine Radio call in an emergency will have help arriving and coordinating from 2 different sources. Click here to go back to the first page of marine cell phone.
