My fascination with shortwave and ham radios taught me a lot!

I used to play chess on shortwave with others from around the world on my shortwave radio. I learned to build my own ham set's in pieces because I couldn't just afford to go out and buy what I wanted. The Radio Engineers Handbook from 1944 was my best friend. I have several newer ones since then, but that one has always been my favourite for sentimental reasons!

And yes, in this day and age, I still love playing with tubes!

I've even designed my own amplifiers, with tubes of course, but they still worked. What I'm about to share with you is 20 years of experimenting and reading and learning everything I could about antennas, amplifiers and when cell phones came out, well I had to have one! I called everyone I could think of on it and took it apart carefully to learn what made it tick, and yes, when I put it back together, it still worked!

Getting the best mobile phone reception is not some magical art. It's pure science and knowing your service provider and the type of cell service you subscribe to will help greatly. Fixed base station antennas and mobile antennas.

Mobile phone antennas such as the types that fit moving vehicles do not require being aimed or focused at a cell tower. These types of antennas are called Omni-beam because they seek out the nearest cell tower in all directions.

Base station antennas such as Yagi antennas need to be aimed or focused at the source of the cell phone tower output signal. There is more about that in the navbar tab "Aim your antenna!"
