Cell phone amplifiers and signal boosters for your mobile phone!
Cell phone amplifiers are an important part of getting the best
cell phone reception. Antenna amplifiers will pick up the cell phone tower signal and amplify or boost it up to a full 3 watts if necesary to help you avoid dropped calls!
Isn't having a external cell phone antenna enough?
It might be! That's the nice thing about being able to build a cell phone antenna system piece by piece because if it isn't enough you can add an amplifier without making your entire system obsolete!
Can't I just get the antenna and cell phone amplifier amplifier and be done with it?
Of course you can and if your sure that your cell phone reception will not improve with just an antenna alone, then getting an entire package would be the way to go. A mountain cabin or vacation home where you know that you have only one bar of signal strength or less without an external cell phone Buy the Dash and receive a free 512MB memory card!
antenna, then getting an amplifier may be necessary!
If you like the idea of not having a wire attached to your phone, then you would want a repeater antenna and amplifier package.
Also a small office and home office amplifier in a weak signal area together with a really good antenna like a Yagi would most likely solve your problems!
Note that I said most likely. A amplifier and antenna package will not give you a signal in all areas. If there is no signal present, then there is nothing to amplify!
How do I find that out? .............................................................
GOOD QUESTION! Let's use GSM cell service here as an example because this is what I have and it took me trial and error to get it right. The principle is the same for all types of service!
Cell tower service signals only travel for 20 miles maximum in ideal conditions like flat land with no obstacles like buildings, hills etc without an external cell phone antenna. Your cell phone's ability to keep you connected enough to make a voice call will be about 1/2 of this. Transferring data will be even less without a cell phone amplifier. It takes more signal to transfer data than it does to make a voice call.
A good antenna system will extend the reach of your cell phone to the nearest tower by up to nearly 100 miles with the proper antenna and amplifier package! You can try the antenna first to see if you have any service with it. If your signal is weak, but present or you want to use a repeater for the reasons mentioned earlier about not having a wire on your phone.
100 miles is quite a boost!
But remember, this is with ideal conditions like flat ground with no obstacles. In your mountain cabin, like mine, I was able to boost my service up to almost 50 miles from the nearest tower!
Use your cell phone for the signal test.
We're still at the mountain cabin, ok? You have zero signal there but it seems like it wasn't that far back to where you could make a call right? This is what happened to me. Turn your cell phone on and having a fully charged battery is best. Now head back the direction you came where you last had signal.
Keep track of how many miles you drove from your cabin to where you first get a signal. One bar will do. If you are twenty miles out from your destination, then there is a good chance you can get an antenna and cell phone amplifier to get cell phone reception at your cabin with an antenna amplifier!
He'res a tip. Be patient during the test!
Cell phones will recognise a signal immediately, but it won't show up on your phone as a signal bar for up to a minute! That's because it sends data to the signal and waits for a response to make sure it is a network connection.
This will apply to aiming your antenna too. The farther your cell tower is from you, the most likely you will have to use a Yagi antenna because these are best in a stationary environment!
The next page will have a link to another section showing the search pattern for different types of antennas.
Knowing the capture radius of your antenna will help to speed up the focusing process!
